Disney, MIT and Carnegie Mellon University are currently working on an haptic VR jacketwhich is intended to provide even more immersion in virtual reality. However, this is not the first Project of this kind.
The system Disney is working on (see also video) consists of 26 chambers. These chambers are filled with air via a vacuum and a compressor. The speed, force and duration can vary. Together with high-frequency vibrations, the air pressure creates certain perceptions on the upper body that can, for example, simulate hugs, hits from snowballs or a snake coiling around the body.
However, the so-called "Force Jacket" is an early prototype, which is why it is still far from being ready for the market. However, the VR jacket could be used in Disney's theme parks and VR arcades in the future.
