The Limit - Robert Rodriguez and Michelle Rodriguez shoot virtual reality series

Cult director Robert Rodriguez loves to explore new visual and technical territory. This was evident in the past, for example, in his comic book adaptations Sin City and Sin City 2, which he co-directed with Frank Miller - the author of the original - and which actually feel like a comic book on the big screen. Now the 49-year-old is looking forward to new challenges, because according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter the filmmaker has tackled a virtual reality series entitled The Limit. Michelle Rodriguez, one of the stars of the Fast & Furious series, is already on board as the lead actress.

Follow the action from a first-person perspective

The Limit is designed as an action series in which the viewer follows the action from a first-person perspective. According to an initial synopsis, Michelle Rodriguez embodies a genetically enhanced (human) weapon of mass destruction who does everything in her power to destroy the secret agency that once created her.

Production of The Limit began last January under the supervision of Double R Productions, a company founded by Robert Rodriguez himself, which, according to the tech-savvy director, was created specifically for such projects to enrich the medium. The native VR experience is created by combining the traditional cinema wide screen with 360-degree video.

The Limit is a completely new format that turns a blockbuster into a cosy cinema experience that audiences can't find anywhere else in the current VR market, says STXsurreal co-president Rick Rey.

The Limit will be released in 2018

STX Entertainment is planning to release The Limit in mid-2018. The series will then be launched via the company's virtual reality app. Rick Rey, co-chairman of STX Entertainment's VR division STXsurreal, describes the series as the birth of a new format that offers a blockbuster cinema experience that viewers cannot find anywhere else on the VR market.
