Eurosport gives an insight into its Olympic studios

The Winter Olympics begin on Friday. Shortly beforehand, Eurosport provided an insight into its studios. Two studios will be broadcasting from Munich, and there is also a studio with a virtual reality environment in South Korea.

Eurosport will not only cover the Winter Olympics on location in PyeongChang, but also at other locations - German coverage will be channelled from Munich, for example, where two studios will be in operation from Friday. The live programme "Dein Olympia Live" will be produced daily from 0:45 to 15:30 in one of them, while the primetime show "zwanzig18 - Die Olympia-Show" will be produced in another.

According to the company itself, "The Cube" studio will play a particularly important role. This is a virtual reality environment that was used for the first time in November. At the Olympic Games, the studio will combine augmented reality, enhanced data and 360-degree graphics. In this way, Eurosport wants to create "previously unavailable insights", according to the broadcaster. Eurosport will report from a total of 17 studios in South Korea, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the UK.

55 Studen Live VR

In cooperation with Intel, Eurosport is broadcasting several events in VR via a special paid app. From 9 to 25 February, one event will be broadcast every day, ranging from the opening ceremony to curling and skiing competitions to the men's ice hockey final. In total, around 55 hours will be broadcast live in VR.

"Two years of intensive planning and great ambition have gone into the preparations for PyeongChang 2018," said Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton. "The Cube in particular is an excellent opportunity to detach our analyses from the pure 2D view on the screen and offer our experts with their entire bodies the perfect platform to convey the technical subtleties that are often difficult for viewers to understand."

Test for 5 days free of charge

Meanwhile, Eurosport has launched a promotion that allows users to test the broadcaster's digital offerings free of charge for five days. "Eurosport's digital platforms are the only destination where every minute of the games can be watched," says Hutton.

Also the ZDF offers some 360-degree live broadcasts, similar to the 2016 Olympics. The latter can be used with Windows Mixed Reality glasses and Samsung Gear VR - but without Intel's innovative camera technology.
