Prize for 360-degree film about Stasi prison

"What did you want in Berlin?" is a 360-degree film about political prisoners in the GDR. This 360-degree film has now won the prestigious German Reporter Award won.

"What did you want in Berlin?" is told from the perspective of a prisoner in a Stasi prison. Berlin-Hohenschönhausen is told. In it, the viewer is interrogated, manipulated, shouted at and humiliated. The 360-degree visualisation is intended to make the VR experience historically accurate and as immersive as possible.

"What did you want in Berlin?" is based on the book "Vernehmungsprotokolle", which was written by the author Jürgen Fuchs was written after his Stasi imprisonment. The VR film attempts to reconstruct what happened as accurately as possible. To this end, contemporary witnesses were interviewed and the film was shot at original locations. This worked out pretty well, as "What did you want in Berlin?" won in the "Best Web Video" category.

The makers write about the project: "In the 360-degree film by Michael Ginsburg, Martin Heller and Christiane Wittenbecher, the user is transformed from observer to participant. The dialogues are based on research in protocols and interviews with contemporary witnesses, some of whom were on site in the historical rooms, in order to be able to depict the experience as accurately as possible. For the actors around Udo Schenk in original Stasi props, it was their first time in a 360-degree film.
