Creative Zürich Wednesday: AR and VR - where is the journey heading?

The Creative Zurich Wednesday event, organised by the City of Zurich, Economic Development Department, took place at the Impact Hub, Zurich Viaduktbögen.

Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are permanent topics in the media. Events on this topic can be found in many places. But what is really feasible? Where are the boundaries between fiction and reality? These and other questions were addressed by the Creative Zurich Wednesday on the evening of 29 November 2017.

Noemi Chow, Master's student at the ZHdK, used examples to show how AR and VR make the world tangible through interaction in simulated environments. Melissa Derrer, lead designer at the Ateo agency, asked: What happens when we put on the glasses? She said that you become part of the world immersion and can even interact with penguins. But it is also a serious technology that is used in medicine, for example by reducing the sensation of pain in burn victims by half.

Swiss should use the brain asset and become pioneers

Dalith Steiger from SwissCognitive offered an analogue presentation in the form of a paper with philosophical depth. "Smart technologies are not only a threat, but also a great opportunity. She said that it was important for the Swiss to make use of the brain asset. "And we have to put our companies in a pioneering position.

Fritz Gottschalk, old master of graphic design, representative of "the very old school", asks: What kind of people are they who make such technology? That is not his world and he does not want to comment on it. Instead, he spoke about the design quality that must be preserved even in these new techniques. He urged the mainly young people present to think outside the box and gain experience abroad.
