The Expanding Immersive Design conference will take place for the second time on 21 November 2017 at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). This year's edition is entitled "Storytelling in the Virtual Age" and focusses fundamentally on narrative strategies in virtual spaces.
The starting point for this year's conference discussion Expanding Immersive Design forms our expectations of immersive media from a neuropsychological, technological and cultural-historical perspective. VR has become a buzzword in a very short space of time. However, despite the celebrated market launch of VR technology for consumers almost a year ago and all the associated euphoria, the sales figures for such systems are still subdued. At the conference, experts will take a critical look at the hype surrounding virtual reality and the vocabulary that accompanies it. The discussion of the term "immersion" should be a fruitful starting point.
The Specialist conference Together with international experts from the fields of design, culture and academia, the exhibition dares to take a bold look into the future and advocates an interdisciplinary approach to the field. In workshops, exhibition formats and a comprehensive programme of lectures, it addresses the urgency of steering the current debate on virtual reality, mixed reality and augmented reality, which is largely driven by economics and technology, towards the fundamental issue of the structural nature of content and the architecture of the immersive, digital and analogue spaces that frame it.
Questions such as: What future scenarios are conceivable with augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR)? What is the basis for our expectations and vocabulary in the discursive debate on VR? How will the triad of body-consciousness-technology be combined in the future? What design challenges and ethical questions does VR present us with?
The Ticket sales for the conference and the associated Workshop offer have now started.
In addition to the conference, the ZHdK offers a Comprehensive offer on the topic of "Bringing digitalisation to life" on 21 November 2017. The ZHdK is thus part of "Digital Day Switzerland", organised by digitalswitzerland.
