Audio experiment turned into VR horror game

Gattai Games has an interesting VR horror game called "Stifled" in the works, which will be released for PlayStation VR on 31 October 2017. The story behind the development is quite interesting.

"Stifled" is an acoustic-based stealth thriller with a microphone function for PSVR. You move through a pitch-black world that only becomes visible by making noises. The problem is that the sounds also draw the attention of enemies lurking in the darkness. Interestingly, this unusual horror game began in 2013 as an audio experiment on the subject of blindness. Back then, the project was still called "Lurking".

"That summer, the team and I accidentally came across an animation of a blind girl who used sounds to find her way around the world and whose current state of mind was represented by the graphics. This animation inspired us to develop an acoustic-based game," says Justin NgManaging Director at Gattai Games. "VR was becoming increasingly popular at the time and we thought, if we're developing an acoustic-based game, why don't we find a way to utilise microphones, which are widely available, for immersion? And with these ideas in tow, we started developing Lurking."

He added: "The original idea for Lurking centred around the use of pitch and volume to explore the environment and solve puzzles. Sound was to play a central role, so we kept the graphics in a simple black and white style and designed some prototypes to test the mechanics of boxes in a dark room that would light up when touched with sound. After several attempts and a flash of inspiration, Bryan (Audio Director for Lurking and Stifled) said: "This is ideal for a horror game." This was finally realised and developed into a real game.
