Once upon a time Ubisoft had a joke with Nosulus Rift allowed to promote the role-playing game "South Park: The Spectacular Trial of Tears", but at some point such odour simulations could become the norm in VR. The Japanese start-up Vaqso is currently working on a product that can be used with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR.
Apparently, investors believe in the project, because Vaqso has now issued a Investment sum in the amount of 600,000 US dollars from Weru Investment. The money will be used to further develop the project. In this way, people will be able to perceive different smells in films, games and VR experiences in the future.
In order for the smell to last, the simulator has to be refilled with new capsules every month. This means that users will have to pay follow-up costs. Vaqso VR is very compact and is attached to the lower edge of the VR glasses (i.e. directly in front of the nose). One battery charge should last about two hours. Alternatively, it can be operated via the USB port of HTC Vive.
