Ikea & Apple work on AR app

Apple and Ikea are working on a new Augmented reality-app, which allows you to furnish your home in advance and virtually with the Swedish furniture giant. According to Ikea manager Michael Valdsgaard, this will be the first AR app that can be used to make reliable purchasing decisions. When new furniture is offered, it will first be available via this app.

The app will reportedly allow users to take photos of their own home. It will then be possible to place photorealistic render graphics of Ikea products. It should even be possible to position the virtual furniture with millimetre precision. If this works, you will be able to rely on the AR app. Between 500 and 600 3D models will be available at launch.

According to the current state of affairs, the Ikea app will be released with the launch of iOS 11 in autumn 2017. Unfortunately, it will not initially be possible to buy products directly via the AR app. This will be added in a later version. Incidentally, Ikea has already gained experience with augmented reality. AR features have already been added to the catalogue app (see video). In addition, the free "Ikea VR Experience" for HTC Vive (see image). Here you can take a look at a freely accessible and interactive Ikea kitchen.
