At the Google I/O developer conference, it was confirmed that Google with HTC and Lenovo are cooperating to release standalone VR headsets. Such VR glasses do not require any additional hardware, such as a smartphone, a PC or external sensors. The VR experience is supposed to become easier, more comfortable and more immersive in this way, as cables are dispensed with.
The autonomous VR system is based on Google's Daydream platform, while at the same time using Tango-based inside-out tracking. Accordingly, sensors are installed in the housing of the VR headset that scan the environment and determine the position in space. The whole thing is called "World Sense" and is supposed to work better than other solutions of this kind.
Qualcomm's reference design, which is equipped with a Snapdragon 835 processor, serves as the technical basis for the new VR headsets, which, by the way, will be released later this year. That could even Eye-tracking mean. Unfortunately, no price details have been given so far. Interested users will have to be patient for a while.
