The 89th Academy Awards will take place next Sunday, 26 February 2017 in Los Angeles. And for the first time, a VR film is nominated.
The virtual reality short film Pearl has been nominated for the 2017 Academy Awards in the "Animated Short Films" category. The five-minute film can be viewed free of charge in 360° in the browser and via a smartphone app on YouTube without VR glasses. You can also watch the film with positional tracking with the Vive experience.
The film by director Patrick Osborne is set in the family car of Pearl and her father, who drives her around as a musician for years until she is allowed to drive herself. Viewers can watch the story from any angle with the 360° film.
The Google short film from the virtual reality series "Google Spotlight Story" celebrated its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2016. With its Oscar nomination, the film brings the new VR technology to a wider audience.
