Using VR for the therapy of anxiety

A fear of spiders and a room with over 600 creepy-crawlies - there could hardly be a worse situation for someone affected. On Fear360 you can accompany the protagonist Ursina, who suffers from arachnophobia, into a room with 130 terrariums via a 360° video.

The Angst360 web project presents immersive journalistic material on the topic of fear on its website: facts, theories and audiovisual content as a 360° experience. How can fears be countered? How has the concept of fear changed? How do experts assess fear? And last but not least: What does fear feel like?

The transmedia project (telling the story of fear across several media) was realised by the 5th semester CAST of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZhdK).

VR as a form of treatment

The Board of Directors Forms of treatment also have their place alongside behavioural therapy, homeopathy, acupuncture, hypnosis and a healthy lifestyle. The innovation of treating anxiety with VR is currently still in the research phase. The expert Rose Ehemann, who is an art therapist and runs the Living Museum within the studios at the psychiatric clinic in Wil SG, explains in the video how VR can be used. She also says that we are only at the beginning. However, she can already see the numerous possibilities that VR offers for therapies.

People with various fears, e.g. fear of flying or phobias, but also people who shy away from social contact or have low self-esteem, can be motivated with VR to face their fears step by step or change their behaviour. It also helps people with a low urge to exercise. As our report on VR Fitness shows that VR can have a motivating effect on the sporting activities of certain people.

Professional support will continue to be needed

The brilliant thing about VR therapy is that you don't have to face your fears in real life. If it becomes too much for the client, the therapist can simply pull the plug. Of course, professional support is still needed in such cases. Facing your biggest fears alone at home when immersed in an immersive virtual world is almost certainly not the best idea. But with the support of an experienced therapist, you can try it out step by step and face your fears.
