With modern VR headsets such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, many users struggle with the cables, which can pose a tripping hazard and restrict freedom of movement. Fortunately, there are companies working on a solution. KwikVR from Scalable Graphics is one of them. KwikVR is a small box weighing just under 500 grams that can be easily attached to a belt. It has an HDMI port and two USB ports.
Both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are supported. The cables of the two VR headsets, which are normally connected to the PC, are plugged into the box. The data is then transmitted via WiFi (5Ghz). KwikVR comes with its own router and HDMI dongle for this purpose. According to the manufacturer, the Latency at less than 12 milliseconds. In addition, the native resolutions of the headsets and 90 Images per second supported.
The battery life is said to be around four hours, which should easily be enough for a standard VR session. KwikVR will be unveiled this week at CES 2017 in Las Vegas, which is why more information on price and availability should be available soon. The competing systems TPCAST and RIVVR will also be represented at the trade fair. This offers customers a certain amount of choice.
