Pimax introduces VR headset with 200-degree field of view

The Chinese hardware manufacturer Pimax will be presenting a new VR headset at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although the VR headset does not yet have a name, the technical specifications look very promising at first glance. Pimax promises a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) per eye, which is why it is also referred to as an 8K headset. This is achieved via two 4K LCD screens, while the major competitors rely on OLED. Pimax also mentions a Field of vision of 200 degrees. The Latency should be less than 18 milliseconds and spatial TrackingThe motion detection function, i.e. the detection of movements in space, is also on board (including the motion controller).

The field of vision and resolution were major criticisms of previous VR headsets. PlayStation VR, for example, has a field of vision of around 100 degrees. HTC Vive still manages 110 degrees. Michael Abrash, Chief Scientist at Oculus, recently said that 2x 4K and a field of view of 200 degrees cannot be realised before 2021. We can therefore look forward to CES 2017, although the LCD screens could be a weak point. The International Consumer Electronics Show will take place from 5 to 8 January 2017 in Las Vegas.
