VR Glove nominated for Digital Health Award

At the German Digital Health Award, the jury will decide between an app, a virtual reality glove and other projects. The nominated "Cynteract Glove for the Virtual" is intended to be used for rehabilitation purposes, especially for young people.

The jury of the Novartis Pharma and Sandoz Deutschland/Hexal Digital Health Award has selected seven top candidates from 82 entries. According to the judges, these have the potential to sustainably improve healthcare in Germany with digital tools. The four-member jury will now select three winners from the competitors. The winners will then be announced in Berlin on 15 March. The Digital Health Prize is endowed with prize money totalling 50,000 euros.

Bulky name - simple rehab

It also includes a virtual reality glove. The glove "Cynteract Glove for the Virtual" - or in German just as bulky "Interactive Rehabilitation Glove" - from the company Cynteract GmbH is intended to optimise the often monotonous and cost-intensive rehabilitation of hand injuries and motivate patients to train their injured hand in virtual games.

An integrated motor makes it possible to exert force on fingers via cords and thus give a player haptic feedback. It is also intended to prevent poor posture and chronic complaints that can affect video gamers and smartphone users due to frequent, limited strain.

Supporting your own friend during rehab

The very young team at the Aachen-based start-up was inspired by a friend who suffered a stroke at the age of 15. As a result, he had to endure a difficult, boring and monotonous rehabilitation programme, according to the developers. "After a short time, our friend finished his rehabilitation. This led to a deterioration in his hand function. As we were worried about him, we decided to find a solution. We developed a glove with sensors and motors that allows the patient to control games while he - subconsciously - performs his rehabilitation exercises."

Gaming desired

Normally, parents don't like it when children and teenagers spend hours gaming or are busy on their smartphones half the day. But in this case, it will definitely be different. After all, young people in particular should be picked up by the glove for playful rehab. Such applications will certainly become more common in the future. Physiotherapy used.
