Audi has already announced its Holoride virtual in-flight entertainment in 2019. Now the technology is celebrating its premiere. From June, passengers will be able to play games via data glasses - and no longer get seasick.
Audi has already made the headlines several times with virtual reality technologies, about which we reported. In June, the Holoride on-board entertainment system, which was already presented for the first time in 2019, will celebrate its premiere in several vehicles of the Volkswagen subsidiary. Now, at the tech festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin/Texas, Holoride was presented and experience drives were offered to visitors. Audi promises: "The car ride becomes a multimodal gaming experience."
From June it's off
Audi is the world's first car manufacturer to bring virtual reality entertainment from holoride into series production. From June, you can take a seat in the rear and immerse yourself in various media formats such as games, films and interactive content with virtual reality glasses. Selected models rolling off the production line with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) and the latest software cluster will be holoride-enabled. Specifically, these are: Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Audi Q5, Q7, Q8, Audi e-tron and Audi e-tron GT quattro. From June, the Audi models mentioned will be ready for holoride throughout the European market, as well as in Canada, the USA, Japan and China. The availability of holoride itself may vary depending on the market. The start-up's new technology is being launched in Germany, England and the US market. Other markets will follow successively.
To use holoride, an approved virtual reality headset must be paired with the vehicle. The connection is wireless via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
Elastic Content
The games or adventures that passengers experience with compatible data glasses are connected to the on-board entertainment and sensors of the vehicle. When the Audi accelerates, brakes or drives through curves, objects in the game such as spaceships also move accordingly. This so-called Elastic Content is not only intended to provide an even more comprehensive gaming experience. Holoride also reduces the risk of motion sickness - the effect reminiscent of seasickness when the movements in front of the eyes and the body do not match.
Holoride originated in the Audi laboratories. However, in order to spread the technology quickly, it is also available to other car manufacturers as open source.
