chaos is a condition

Chaos is a Condition - Museum from Home

In Leipzig, an extended reality exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts entitled Chaos is a Condition explored new digital experience spaces and virtual realities. This year, the DOK Neuland format is presenting ten XR works that deal with the consequences of the climate crisis, digitalisation and the pandemic. Although the exhibition is over, the virtual reality (VR) experiences can be enjoyed online from home.

The climate crisis, the shift of realities of life to the digital realm, unequal global living conditions and, last but not least, a global pandemic - all of this clearly shows that our principles of order are beginning to falter. It shows that chaos, when understood as a disorganised, confusing state, is increasingly taking over. Chaos is a Condition is the title of the current DOK-Neuland exhibition.

Virtual reality, animation and 360-degree films

Six VR works and four 360-degree films were selected from around 130 submissions, which now run like a common thread through the international artists' exploration of chaos, the fears and anxieties associated with it, but also its potential.

The exhibition itself is divided into three clusters. The first part is entitled Present Chaos and presents a kind of inventory of current locations where chaotic conditions prevail. The 360-degree film Reeducated by Sam Wolson, for example, uses animation to reconstruct the memories of three men from a Muslim minority who were subjected to torture and political indoctrination in a so-called re-education camp in China.

Artificial intelligence meets climate change

The second section, Transformation, looks at the major challenges facing humanity. Topics such as artificial intelligence play a role here, as do climate change and questions of gender and identity. For example, They Dream in my Bones by Faye Formisano from France deals with these issues. In her black-and-white collage of text, 3D images and classic film footage, she explores how people are shaped by their DNA and shows a scientist trying to extract dreams from a skeleton in order to discover its identity.

Finally, a third set of topics is dedicated to alternative strategies for dealing with chaos - with intuition, spirituality and imagination - in the spirit of No Chaos, no Change.

This year, for the first time, from 26 October to 14 November 2021, you will have the opportunity to experience VR from DOK New territory online with your own headset from the comfort of your own home.
