Oculus VR soon requires Facebook account

Oculus has confirmed that its own VR customers will soon require a Facebook account in order to use all the functions of the VR headsets. The existing Oculus account will be abolished.

For new customers coming into contact with Oculus VR for the first time, this change will come into force in October 2020. Existing Oculus users, on the other hand, have until 1 January 2023 to merge their Oculus account with a Facebook account, otherwise restrictions are unfortunately to be expected. Anyone who buys a future Oculus device will also have to come to terms with Facebook, even if they have an Oculus account and 1 January 2023 has not yet arrived.

The statement on this far-reaching change reads: "If you do not wish to merge your accounts by this time, you can continue to use your device, but a Facebook account is required for full functionality." It should be clear that many users do not like this decision at all. There are enough people who refuse to use Facebook because of the data protection issues.

Oculus continues: "We will take steps to ensure that you can continue to use the content you have purchased, although we anticipate that some games and applications may no longer work. This could be because they contain features that require a Facebook account, or because a developer has decided to no longer support the app or game you purchased. All future and unreleased Oculus devices will require a Facebook account, even if you already have an Oculus account."
