Museum of Communication goes digital

The Museum of Communication in Bern is pursuing a digital strategy, which - almost logically - also leads to VR.

"You cannot not communicate." The famous of 5 axioms of Paul Watzlawick's communication theory definitely also applies to the Museum of Communication in Bern. The museum was awarded the prestigious Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2019 for its innovative and fantastic exhibitions.

The museum is currently hosting an exhibition on inhibitions. In the next major temporary exhibition from autumn 2020, the museum will focus on the new possibilities of digitalisation, artificial intelligence and biotechnology. The focus will be on topics such as self-optimisation and reinvention.

Digital strategy

The museum is not only concerned with digital development in its exhibitions. Last year, those responsible developed a digital strategy in order to be prepared for future challenges. The first projects have already been launched. For example, the "Sounds of Silence" exhibition is being reconstructed as a virtual reality format. Together with a National Science Foundation project, the museum has also created an interactive teaching aid on big data.

Save photos from decay

Another task for the museum in the coming years will be to digitise the photo collection. Today, the collection's online database contains around 150,000 entries. Now 500,000 photos are to be added. The images are increasingly threatened by decay. Photo digitisation should be completed in ten years.
