Test: Pistol Whip

Pistol Whip" from Cloudhead Games is an action-packed rhythm shooter that demands a lot from your nimble movements. In the linear arcade ballgame, however, you enjoy full freedom of movement. The influence of lich sword orgies such as "Beat Saber" is unmistakable, but at the same time one has the feeling of reliving game scenes from films like "Matrix" or "John Wick". The developers themselves describe the beat shooter as a mixture between classic arcade shooters such as "Time Crisis", "Virtua Cop" and new VR influences from "Superhot" and the very Jedi Knight game called "Beat Saber".

On your marks, get set, shoot

Your correct timing is in demand. Quick dodging, ducking, shooting and close combat with your fists will get your adrenaline pumping. A good auto-aim system facilitates quick aiming, while pulsating red circles draw your attention to approaching projectiles. You will be confronted by about three different enemy types. Since "Pistol Whip" is a shooter, the developers recommend focusing more on the shooting action than on rhythmic movements at the beginning. Some of the rivals also require more than one shot. Not only your offensive skills are required, but also a very fast reaction. To revitalise or strengthen your defences, you should do everything you can to fire at the shield symbols with plenty of aiming water.

Being John Wick for once

A short training mode makes it easy for you to get started, so that you are ready to go in just a few minutes. There are around ten shooting missions to choose from. What keeps you happy is the possibility to modify your shooting irons after completing a game level. Different bullet strengths such as duller or gaudier bullet sounds to try out freely are a lot of fun. The action is very demanding. You have to give it your all and dodge quickly. And at the end there are points to be won. But that's exactly what makes "Pistol Whip" so good: just put on the headset and slip into the skin of a virtual cyber-action star without being overwhelmed by countless game modes and defence training sessions.

The graphics of the fast-paced sci-fi shooter from the Canadian games company are intentionally simple. The 3D models of the polygonal enemies shatter into several splinters and can be beaten up at close range in direct confrontation. The shimmering colourful environments put you in a visual trance, while your adversaries attack you in a flurry of rhythms. At first glance, the mission corridors seem to be similar, but from stage to stage they change their degree of enclosure or bridge-like character when it comes to quick dodging.

The launch soundtrack consists of ten licensed songs by the band "Kannibalen Records". According to the makers, there will be various music updates, including both free and paid DLC music. There is also talk of new levels, modes and customisation options.
