Protests in Hong Kong: Students develop VR app

Soon you will be able to experience in VR what it feels like to be in the front row of the protests in Hong Kong.

A group of students in Hong Kong have developed a virtual reality experience that transports VR glasses wearers to the front row of protests against the Chinese government. Users have to dodge tear gas, hide behind barriers or flee from the police.

According to 30-year-old developer Lam, the VR experience is designed to bring to life the hardships and risks taken by protesters in Hong Kong. Key moments of the protests are recounted in an interactive feature. Among other things, a so-called "Lennon Wall" can also be viewed, a wall full of colourful sticky notes on which protesters write their wishes and demands to the government.

In the role of a protester, you cannot engage in violence or illegal actions for fear that the app could then be rejected by online platforms. The students, who are among the protesters, are planning to release the game on Steam next month. The application has already been submitted.

Lam developed the app together with two colleagues. The following video shows some scenes.
