The Lab: Valve brings cult VR app up to the latest technical standard

The Lab was released in spring 2016 for the market launch of the HTC Vive and was intended to introduce VR newcomers to the possibilities of room-filling virtual reality in a clever and entertaining way. Now Valve has improved the app for old and new VR users and brought it up to the latest technical level of SteamVR.

The update is called Hands-on and brings support for Valve's Skeletal Input, a SteamVR software that ensures optimal hand presence across all available VR controllers. This means that Index controllers, including finger tracking, now work with The Lab without limitations. SteamVR Input is now also supported, so that users can configure the button assignment of their VR controllers as they wish.

Valve has also completely revised the physics-based interactions in the game. Interactive objects and virtual hands now behave more realistically. The same applies to audio effects: The update makes The Lab compatible with Steam Audio, so it benefits from the latest 3D spatial sound technology.

The game has been ported to the latest version of the underlying engine. This improves performance and allows you to experience The Lab in higher resolutions and frame rates. Last but not least, Valve has listened to fan feedback and improved the gameplay in numerous ways to make the VR experience even more accessible.

There is still no news about the flagship VR title developed by Valve, which is scheduled for release later this year for all SteamVR-compatible VR glasses.
