VR accelerates vehicle development

Virtual becomes real at Volke Entwicklungsring SE: the company is moving development into virtual space. There, several users can create and modify CAD data and experience the models from any location. The necessary computing power comes from Dell workstations and Nvidia graphics solutions.

Before a new car model is launched on the market, there is a long moulding process. Even today, vehicle models are still produced by hand at various stages of development, which is time-consuming and costly. To shorten the time from the initial idea to series production, Volke Entwicklungsring SE has developed the "Cloudmodelling" solution.

Cloud modelling: Create and modify 3D CAD data together

Cloud modelling is a virtual environment in which three-dimensional CAD data can be created and modified. With cloud modelling, up to ten users can walk around the car at the same time, regardless of their location, create new areas and make changes to the model live. They wear virtual reality goggles and two hand controllers for interaction. In the virtual space, the 3,500 geographically distributed engineers can then either draw freely by hand from anywhere in the world or use precision tools to create or modify surfaces and curves. The experts not only assess the overall visual impression of a new model, but can also inspect the exterior, interior and body shell, clarify ergonomic, construction, production and cost-related issues and immediately correct any weak points in the design.
