SunExpress launches virtual reality entertainment

From May, guests of the Turkish-German holiday airline SunExpress will be able to consume a broad VR entertainment programme.

VR seems to be becoming more and more widespread in the airline industry. Just the day before yesterday we reported again on a project with Lufthansa. reports and today it continues: The Turkish-German holiday airline SunExpress, which is probably less well-known in this country, is positioning itself as an innovation driver and is offering in-flight entertainment via virtual reality glasses on some aircraft during the summer season. The concept is being developed together with the start-up Inflight VR and is to be offered on various flights from Antalya to Europe from the end of May.

For a fee of eight euros, the virtual reality glasses are available to every passenger on board. These are intended to offer travellers a completely new 360-degree entertainment experience, ranging from cinema films and documentaries to meditative relaxation clips.

Innovation above the clouds

"With the introduction of VR entertainment, we are writing the next chapter in our innovation story," said Peter Glade, Chief Commercial Officer at SunExpress. "Our collaboration with Inflight VR offers us a flexible, cost-effective and logistically compelling solution. We are proud to be able to offer our passengers this option on numerous flights from Antalya this summer."

"We believe in the tremendous potential that VR has to change the way passengers experience media and discover places. We also believe in the additional value and opportunities that VR offers companies like SunExpress to interact with customers in new ways and generate additional revenue streams," said Raphael Baumann, Chief Commercial Officer at Inflight VR.

Bringing virtual reality on board requires a high level of effort in technology integration. You have to offer flexible integration options while meeting cabin safety precautions, and you also have to take into account aspects that adversely affect the VR user experience. This also means protecting the content as well as generating revenue - these are the issues that Inflight VR has been able to successfully address thanks to its business and technology expertise.
