The special exhibition "Fantastic Worlds, Perfect Worlds - Visual Effects in Film" at the Filmmuseum Düsseldorf, Schulstraße 4, now gives visitors access to Germany's first walk-through film "A Whole Life" with the help of virtual reality glasses.
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of the UFA the internationally awarded VR production by UFA and Fraunhofer HHI celebrated its premiere. In the virtual reality experience, visitors follow the actress Maria through the history of the film. They experience the shooting of the early film in the 1920s in a walk-through world. In the course of the VR experience, the viewer experiences how technical tricks and illusion were used to seduce the audience.
The technology enables the viewer to move around the actors in the film while being in the middle of the action. This allows them to actively and individually influence their own film experience. This form, volumetric video, is seen worldwide as the next important developmental step in the field of media production. Hologram technology is used, in which hologram-like representations of real people are created.
The project was supported with funds from Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and Telekom. The production by UFA LAB and UFA Technology is considered the first volumetric film in Germany and was already awarded the Laval Virtual Award in the category "Arts and Cultural Heritage" in 2018. The deputy director of the Filmmuseum, Matthias Knop, and the museum's media technician, René Sämmang, worked to expand the special exhibition to include this experience.
