"Last Words VR" deals with the loss of a loved one and how to cope with it. The VR experience was developed by Austrian students for a master's thesis and can be downloaded free of charge from Steam.
"Last Words VR" is a story VR experience in which you take on the role of Lisa. After the death of her brother Leo, she tries to find a reason for her brother's deed and her own feelings of guilt by exploring her childhood memories. In the process, they discover a terrible secret from their childhood.
The exploration of a trauma
The players face their memories in a strange, shattered world of fog. Hidden in the past is not only the relationship with the brother, but also the repressed event that led to his death. The player's goal is to explore the broken memories and put them back together to solve the mystery of the repressed trauma. To do this, you have to explore the surroundings and listen to various cassettes to learn more about your childhood together.
Last Words VR is the master's project of Austrian students Matthias Patscheider, Samantha Povolny and Bianca Zankl, who completed the Digital Arts master's programme in Hagenberg.
An invented emotional journey
The story depicted in the VR experience is not based on a true story, says Patscheider.
"The original concept is based on the feeling that something bad is happening to someone very important to you and that you can't do anything about it. In other words, we knew very early on what feeling we wanted to evoke in the player and what emotional journey the main character Lisa should go through."
The application has recently been made available free of charge on Steam available. The game was designed for the HTC Vive in a room-scale setup, but it can also be played on the Oculus Rift with a 360° setup and the Touch Controllers. A serious topic that may not be suitable for everyone, but all the more exciting for those who don't shy away from it.
