Microsoft announced the new HoloLens 2 AR glasses at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona. HoloLens 2 will be available for USD 3,500, which is not cheap, but it was clear from the presentation that the device is intended for the workplace or business customers anyway.
HoloLens 2 will initially be launched on the market in the USA, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Australia and New Zealand later this year. Switzerland will not be officially supplied for the time being, while games and entertainment are not the focus, even if the Unreal Engine 4 is supported, but this can be used for the visualisation of constructions or in architecture, for example.
HoloLens 2 promises a field of vision twice as large as its predecessor. The resolution and gesture recognition have also been improved. A so-called MEMS display is used (microelectromechanical system). Apparently, the screen works with oscillating lasers that project an image via a mirror system and waveguides.
When it comes to the hardware, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 (SoC) and a holographic processing unit developed by Microsoft are used. If the internal computing power is not sufficient, Microsoft's Azure cloud technology can also be used. The official site provides some information and the videos show various application examples.
