From the reservoir to the power socket

Zurich-based VR/AR service provider Bandara has created a virtual reality film for EWZ that brings ecological electricity production to life.

Where does the electricity that keeps our smartphones and laptops running actually come from? In order to answer this question in the most innovative way possible, the electricity utility of the city of Zurich (EWZ) has turned to virtual reality. The VR experts from Bandara were called in to design and produce a 360-degree film lasting almost six minutes.

During the realisation combined Bandara stereoscopic 360-degree shots with drone footage and computer-generated 3D sequences. According to the press release, the result is "a breathtaking journey that lets viewers float over Graubünden landscapes, dive into the water and even race through a power cable".

Sound, images and light impressively demonstrate how and from which resources electricity is produced. Visitors learn more about scientific aspects, why economical electricity consumption is not only worthwhile for the wallet and how environmentally friendly energy production works.

Versatile in use

The VR film is permanently integrated into the existing guided tour at the ewz power plant in Höngg. In addition, the VR film is often taken to trade fair appearances to create a "wow" effect for visitors and inspire them emotionally. It was also shown in a one-minute short version at the VR cinema on the Uetliberg.

"So far, we have received nothing but positive feedback," Marcel Langenegger, Live Experience Specialist at EWZ, is quoted as saying. "Many viewers are putting on VR glasses for the first time and are absolutely thrilled with the possibilities. No matter where the film is consumed, ewz's range of services can be experienced everywhere. Customers should become fans of ewz and be convinced of ewz's visionary commitment to a sustainable future."

EWZ has been experimenting with the new technology for some time now. Last year, for example, they offered the people of Zurich a special Mixed Reality Gamewhere users were able to experience the development of electricity in Zurich and Graubünden over six exciting epochs, from its beginnings to far into the future.
