Nokia is reducing its efforts in the VR field: as the company has now announced, the 360-degree camera Ozo will be discontinued. For Nokia, this was a rather short VR adventure.
Nokia officially justifies the decision with slow growth in the virtual reality market, but increasing competition in this segment may also have played a role. The further development of the High-end 360-degree camera Ozo will be stopped, but existing customers will continue to be served, according to the company. In this context, Nokia also has to lay off 310 of the 1,090 employees at Nokia Technologies. This mainly affects Finland, the USA and the UK.
Ozo was launched in spring 2016 as the most advanced 360-degree camera. It supports, for example, stereoscopic 3D recording, live stitching and live streaming. Initially, 60,000 euros per device was due, but the price drop after a few months (to 45,000 euros) has already indicated that Ozo is unlikely to be a sales hit. Nevertheless, some well-known and elaborate 360 productions have been shot with Nokia's VR camera.
