VR glasses as a visual aid

VR headsets are now very helpful in various areas of application. Samsung has now developed an app for Gear VR that helps people with visual impairments. This involves "Relúmĭno".

The outside world is recorded via the smartphone camera and amplified or magnified accordingly. This allows people with visual impairments to recognise things that they could not see before. "Relúmĭno" can enlarge or reduce objects, enhance contours and adjust contrast and brightness. Even colours can be inverted and filtered.

"Relúmĭno" also helps people who have a blind spot or suffer from tunnel vision. Users can determine which areas they cannot recognise. The app copies these parts into a visible area accordingly. The big advantage of "Relúmĭno": according to Samsung, professional visual aids cost a lot of money, while "Relúmĭno" is available free of charge, even if you have to buy a smartphone and Gear VR.

The app is free for owners of a Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8 and S8+ in the Oculus Store available (so far in English and Korean). Samsung is also planning a further development that is more suitable for everyday use, less conspicuous and no longer requires Gear VR.
