Unofficial Spider-Man VR Game

A lot of official content about the comic book hero Spiderman has appeared recently. Now the unofficial side is also striking. A fan project lets users swing through the air.

Sony Pictures Entertainment Studios released a matching VR experience for the recently released film Spiderman: Homecoming and an announcement about a PSVR game was also made. The friendly spider from the neighbourhood is also a playable character in Marvel Powers United VR, which will be released in 2018. However, an unofficial demo of a fan project has now also appeared on Reddit, allowing users to swing through the air.

On Reddita social news aggregator, the user Maxalo published the prototype of his self-created SpidermanVR game. In it, you take on the role of the superhero and swing through New York City with your net launcher. The game was developed for the Oculus Rift and requires Oculus Touch controllers for control.

Cast nets and fly

Use the controllers to aim at the city's buildings and then fire a net using the trigger button. This flies forwards in a straight line towards its target. If you hit a solid surface, the net attaches itself and you swing forwards. Users can even pull themselves up by their thrown net to fly higher into the air. The game thus utilises a relatively realistic physics engine for locomotion.

However, you still have to make a few compromises in the demo: Unfortunately, you can't move around on the walls and the graphics are still at a very low level. And according to VR Nerds, there are still many bugs and errors in the game. Motion sickness could also be a problem.

To get a first impression of the gameplay, you can take a look at the video:

This is an unofficial fan version, which means, Marvel or other rights holders are not involved. According to the developer Maxalo, he wants to replace the comic hero Spiderman with a neutral character with a grappling hook in order to avoid legal difficulties with the brand and those responsible.
