Next week sees the start of E3 2017 in Los Angeles, the most important trade fair for video games. Microsoft will be presenting its latest console there, the Xbox Scorpio, which is also set to receive VR support at some point. However, no Xbox VR will be announced or shown at E3 2017, as confirmed by Microsoft's Alex Kipman. A release is not expected before 2018, but the company did not want to comment further on this. Previous statements from Microsoft have hinted at 2018, but this may have changed again.
Instead, Microsoft would first like to concentrate on making Mixed Reality a success on Windows 10 PCs. Mixed Reality as a term summarises in this case Virtual Reality and Augmented reality together. "We believe that the Windows PC, with its open system and enormous hardware base, is currently the best platform for mixed reality. It offers the best opportunities for developers and the greatest choice for consumers," said Alex Kipman. Another reason for a later release of Xbox VR is that Microsoft believes that a VR headset on the console should be wireless. The technology is not yet advanced enough for 2017.
