Oculus and Facebook have surprisingly announced that the Oculus Story Studio, which was founded three years ago, is to be closed. The department has produced some of the best VR content for Oculus Rift. This includes, for example, the art programme "Quill"which has already been used to create some outstanding 3D artworks. The animated film "Dear Angelica" was created with it. For the cute short film "Henry" even won an Emmy. "Lost" (not the TV series) is another interesting project from Oculus Story Studios. Nevertheless, its success could not prevent its closure.
At official blog states: "After careful consideration, we have decided to move our focus away from internal content development to increasingly support external productions." The Oculus Story Studios were intended to show the industry that the VR medium can also be used for exciting stories. As this has been achieved, external projects are now being supported and financed. Of a planned investment of 250 million US dollars, 50 million US dollars will be invested in experimental VR content, according to Oculus, in order to promote innovative ideas outside of gaming.
