Developer Harmonix has announced that "Rock Band VR" will be released for Oculus Rift on 23 March 2017, including a package with an original Fender Stratocaster controller. While the previous "Rock Band" games focussed on correctly recreating studio recordings, "Rock Band VR" delivers the feeling of performing on stage in front of a sold-out audience. Interaction with the band members is also enhanced. The trailer at the end of the news demonstrates quite well how this is meant.
"The audio solution integrated into Rift does a phenomenal job of spatially localising the sounds around the players," explains composer and sound designer Steve Pardo. "When you teleport to different places on the stage, the mix changes and adapts to the new location. For the player, it feels like they are really there, with the audience in front, the drums behind them and the amplifier at 11."
Using the tremolo lever on the controller, effect devices can be used and each button combination creates unique sounds, at least that's what the developers promise, allowing you to play unusual guitar solos in real time. "Rock Band VR" will also include a campaign mode with an interactive story and multiplayer leaderboards.
"In order to transfer the rock band experience to virtual reality, we had to completely reinvent the core of our gameplay. And in doing so, we completely exceeded our own expectations," says Creative Lead Greg LoPiccolo. "Rock Band VR feels more like being live on stage than anything I ever thought possible. The idea that players can record their own guitar parts in real time is mind-blowing. Playing solos in Rock Band VR is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in a video game."
