BBC Earthwhich is known for its great documentaries, is producing three different VR experiences together with Oculus. The first VR experience is called "Cat Flight" and shows us the tremendous jumping power of caracals. These are wild cats that live in parts of Africa and Asia. Because of their resemblance to lynxes, they are sometimes referred to as desert lynxes. You will be able to pause the action at any time and even zoom in on the cats. In "Cat Flight", a 360-degree video is combined with computer-generated graphics.
"Oogie", on the other hand, is a game in which you steer a ground beetle through the African savannah. In the game, you will have to deal with obstacles and enemies. And then there's "Bear Island", an interactive 360-degree video about North American black bears travelling through Alaska. Depending on where you look, the story is divided into parallel narrative strands.
Julia Kenyon from BBC Worldwide promises completely new insights into nature for the three projects, which is something to be really excited about. The three VR experiences will be released in January 2017 via Oculus Home and will even be free for the first three months. In addition to Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR is also supported. More documentaries of this kind could follow and be published on YouTube are various 360 degree videos available from BBC Earth.
