Test: Netflix VR for Google Daydream View

Unfortunately, the Google Daydream View not yet available to buy in Switzerland. We quickly imported a copy from the USA to test the new Netflix VR app, which was released last week.

Netflix VR allows users to watch their films and series in a virtual living room on a giant screen. If you have a Netflix account, you can get started right away and take a seat in the virtual living room. Now I immediately asked myself what this would do for me. After all, I have a big TV in my real living room. To find out, I went into the virtual living room.

The virtual living room is beautifully designed and also has the necessary cosiness factor. After logging in with my Netflix account, I started the first film, or rather the brilliant documentary "Hip Hop Evolution". As you would expect, the lights in the virtual living room are automatically turned down and the film starts. The quality is really good. You really feel like you're in your living room in front of a huge screen. Of course, I also try out the controls with the Daydream Controller. That's also very easy to do. I can move very quickly through the menu and scenes using the touchpad. The controller is very intuitive to use. To navigate, the user can either use the touchpad or simply aim and click using the cursor. This allows me to lie on my sofa and watch my films on a giant screen without any great effort. All good so far. Unfortunately, there are also negative points.

The Google Daydream View is very light without a mobile phone. However, as soon as the mobile phone is inserted, everything feels completely different. The mobile phone presses the glasses down. The fastening strap only goes around the head and not over the top, which leads to instability. In addition, light enters the nose area as the glasses do not close properly. The problem can be avoided by tightening the headband, which in turn quickly leads to pressure points. In short, the glasses are not very comfortable.

My personal conclusion on Netflix VR and Google Daydream View: The app is fun and technically excellent. However, I can't imagine watching films for hours on end. The comfort of the Google Daydream View is not sufficient for that. But I will certainly use it for one or two series from time to time.
