The cult board game Catan comes for Virtual Reality

It brings back childhood memories: the German cult board game Catan is being realised for virtual reality. It will be released at the end of the year, first for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR and then for other VR platforms.

The race to colonise Catan began back in 1995. In the meantime, the board game has sold more than 20 million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages. The well-known board game with the hexagonal landscape cards and the bartering that dominates the action was invented by Klaus Teuber. The aim of the cult game is to establish your settlements on the Catan Island colonies in the right places, build sensible roads and trade resources with a clever hand.

Catan VR

In the virtual reality version, players will be able to see settlements being built before their eyes. It will also be possible to play the game with other VR users via the internet. Catan VR will remain true to the classic game and will simply be optimised for virtual reality. This will give fans and new players alike the opportunity to experience the successful board game in a completely new format. Unfortunately, an initial announcement trailer does not yet show any images from the game.

Catan VR was announced at PAX West. The title is being developed by VR studio Experiment 7 in collaboration with Catan GmbH. The studio is the developer and operator of the VR board game platform Magic Table and has already released two VR titles, "Magic Table Chess" and "Dungeon Chess". The game is distributed by Asmodee Digital. With Catan VR, the island will be brought to life in just a few months with Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR.

Immerse yourself in the world

And the founder is also enthusiastic: "When I saw Catan VR for the first time, I was fascinated by the possibilities that virtual reality offers," writes Klaus Teuber in a press release. "The game I created 25 years ago in my living room with my family in virtual reality? That's incredible. When we first started cutting the game out of cardboard, I would never have dreamed of immersing myself in the world of Catan."
