With Google technology for SRF on the Gurten

The Zurich Virtual Reality Content Studio Bandara was selected by Google as one of 20 international partners worldwide for the Jump Start programme. The system was used for a VR film of a performance at the Gurten Festival, which was produced on behalf of SRF.

The search engine giant Google has recently started helping young companies with high-quality equipment. The VR content studio Bandara is the only Swiss company to have been granted access to Google's programme called Jump Start selected. Bandara thus received a free jump camera test set for a professional VR video solution that allows recordings not only in 360°, but also in impressive 3D. The technical component - a mount that connects 16 GoPro action cams in a ring - was developed in collaboration with GoPro.

Bandara VR GmbH supports its customers in utilising 360°, VR and AR content profitably - from conception to production and distribution. Since it was founded in autumn 2015, Bandara has implemented around 50 VR projects, including for clients such as Migros, Swiss Post, Geberit, Swisscom, Jung von Matt and the City of Zurich.

Reportage with the artist Nemo

The system was used for a VR film produced on behalf of SRF: Bandara accompanied the successful young Swiss musician Nemo during his first big performance at the Gurtenfestival - from the journey on the Gurtenbahn railway and the preparations backstage to the big performance, where you can virtually join Nemo on stage. To experience the reportage in 3D, you should watch the video in the YouTube app with a Cardboard.

SRF sees future in VR

SRF intends to continue focussing on VR videos in the future: "Virtual reality and 360° offer new, exciting forms of storytelling that can put viewers right in the middle of the action," says project manager Patricia Banzer. "We are currently trialling various forms of this technology in close collaboration with our editorial teams. Whether it's fictional content, sporting challenges or all-round views behind the scenes of our productions - there is a wide range of ways to convey public service content in this way."

Incidentally, Google is opening a new round for applicants this November.
