Police officers of the future: scanner glasses recognise bad guys

The US Department of Homeland Security is looking at how innovative technology can improve the safety and work of paramedics, police officers and firefighters. Augmented reality plays an important role in this.

In the series "The Future of First Response", the US Department of Homeland Security presents technological visions that are to become reality within the next 15 years.

Facial recognition for the police

The project takes aim at emergency forces who regularly intervene in emergencies and expose themselves to danger in the process. In addition to functional clothing and automatically controlled cars, the video on police work of the future also shows how augmented reality can be used.

In the film, you see a police officer wearing scanner glasses that use facial recognition to identify a passing criminal. The glasses detect the man's face and automatically display his name, the penalty order and a warning. The system then automatically calls in other police officers, who immediately receive the location and all information about the bad guy. It also stores the time and place of the arrest, which facilitates protocol work and avoids errors.

Such contextual information via augmented reality should make the work of the police safer and more efficient. The initiative wants to cooperate with manufacturers who build corresponding glasses for the industry.

Indoor navigation for the fire brigade

Another example shows a firefighter navigating more safely through a smoke-filled building thanks to indoor navigation in the AR glasses.

This function is not science fiction, but already exists. In May, Google introduced the so-called "VPS" system before, a kind of GPS for buildings that orients itself using map material and visually conspicuous points in the surroundings.

As recently reported, there is now also a virtual training application for the fire brigade's respiratory protection forces, which is being developed by the Swiss company asteam ag was conceived. And as the example of VR for Good the VR application from Oculus Rift, which trains medics for stressful and critical emergencies in hospitals - virtual applications will certainly be increasingly used for the training of emergency forces in the future.
