The sunglasses that change the world

With the video glasses called Spectacles, the camera company Snap ventures a first foray into the hardware and wearables sector. The second generation could offer much more than a video function.

According to insiders, Snap is working on a second version of the Spectacles video glasses. However, the prototype is so well guarded internally that hardly any of the 1800 employees at Snap know the details. However, the glasses are supposed to be completely different from the previous model.

The rumour mill is bubbling: At the end of 2016, Snap bought the Israeli augmented reality start-up Cimagine Media, which focuses on shopping experiences in augmented reality.

Expanding the world with digital objects

Among other things, it is rumoured that augmented reality features will be played with. The environment is to be expanded with digital objects that have previously been stored in a database. From there, they are retrieved according to the location of the wearer and streamed to the glasses.

The advantage of this would be that the computing power is outsourced to the smartphone, so that the glasses frame can remain slim and sexy.

Sale of first generation launched

Snap's first camera glasses were sold from a yellow vending machine on Venice Beach near Los Angeles last November. The much sought-after glasses sold like hot cakes for 130 dollars. The prices on eBay quickly shot up to 1000 dollars. In Europe, sales only started this year and the hype about the glasses has probably only just begun in Switzerland.

Hybrid of technology and fashion accessory

The first generation of video glasses is functionally quite limited: At the touch of a button, they record a short video clip - nothing more. On the other hand, the goggles shine with a stylish form factor for the young clientele. It's certainly a bit more stylish than a GoPro on your head.

The glasses can be purchased online via the official website order. The price is 149.99 CHF, a charging case and a charging cable are included.

Peeping Toms in the Pool are Well Equipped

Just recently, the Swiss Association of Outdoor Swimming Pools announced the fight against the "peeping toms". They want to fight against unauthorised photography. Smartphones in particular are on their radar. With the Spectacles, peeping toms now have another tool that will certainly not be recognised as such by every lifeguard and the bathers. With additional augmented reality functions, there are no limits to fantasies.
