Full Body Avatar Rec Room

Rec Room works on full-body avatars

The social app Rec Room plans to introduce full-body avatars.

Rec Room had a comparable number of users. Unlike Meta's Horizon Worlds, however, the social app can also be played on flat screens. Now something is happening in the VR area.

The start-up of the same name opened its social virtual reality meeting place back in 2016 and has responded to many of the community's wishes in the expansions. Among other things, users can cooperatively create additional levels. Another wish of the community: avatars should get legs. This wish is about to come true.

Metaverse legs, and arms

Originally, the studio decided on floating torsos, heads and hands. At the time, the creators saw their project as a kind of accessible VR counterpart to Wii Sports. Accordingly, the figures should look simple and charming - and require little computing power. In the future, users will also be able to log in with full-body avatars.

In a blog post, the developer announced the creation of a small team called the Avatar Initiative, which has been developing the new characters since late 2022: "We're a bigger team now, VR technology has been getting better and better, and we've learned a lot about what works in VR vision and movement."

Therefore, it was time to develop the expressiveness in Rec Room as well. The new full-body avatar with arms, legs, fingers and feet offers more possibilities for expression. Developers will also benefit from better ways to capture movements and explain the gameplay to friends.

Alternatively, the old avatars will continue to be available. Furthermore, the team attaches great importance to the fact that the full-body avatars support all the old items. They almost have to, because users have often spent a lot of money and time constructing their own identities and outfits.

A release date has not yet been set. Users can register via Zendesk or Discord participate in the development. Rec Room is available for free for Meta Quest, PC-VR, PSVR, Pico 4 and many monitor platforms.
