Oculus Quest 2 posts record quarter

According to market researchers at SuperData, the standalone VR headset Oculus Quest 2 had a record quarter. According to the report, the VR device was very successful during the 2020 Christmas season.

As SuperData reports, Oculus Quest 2 sold a whopping 1.098 million units worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2020, followed by PlayStation VR (125,000), Valve Index (61,000) and Oculus Rift/Rift S (55,000). The Oculus Quest 2 sold more units in a single quarter than any other VR device not powered by a smartphone. Samsung Gear VR still holds the overall record here with 1.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016.

"The Quest 2 benefited from a lower price point than its predecessor and also from pent-up demand among those interested in entering the VR segment," the report said. "The Quest 2 was also the first Oculus headset to launch around Christmas time, so the target audience included gift-givers as well as VR enthusiasts."

SuperData projects that standalone headsets such as Quest 2 will account for 87 per cent of VR market share in hardware sales in 2021. According to the market researchers: "Because the Quest 2 can be used to play PC VR titles, a significant proportion of PC gamers are expected to choose the Quest and similar hybrid devices when they purchase a VR headset in the future. The most avid enthusiasts will likely continue to prefer high-end devices like Valve Index and HP Reverb G2."
