Google actually had big VR plans, which is why in 2016 the Daydream View headset was released. However, there is now bad news to report, because Daydream is being discontinued. The enthusiasm apparently failed to materialise.
Production of Daydream is being discontinued and the VR headset will no longer be compatible with the new Pixel 4. The statement: "There hasn't been the widespread adoption by consumers or developers that we had hoped for. We saw usage of the Daydream View headset decline over time. So while we no longer sell Daydream View or support Daydream on Pixel 4, the Daydream app and shop will remain available for existing users."
Even if the Daydream app and shop remain online, Google has thus given the VR headset the death blow. "We saw a lot of potential in smartphone VR to use the smartphone you have with you everywhere for an immersive on-the-go experience. But over time, we found some significant limitations that keep smartphone VR from being a viable long-term solution. In particular, asking people to put their phone in a headset and losing access to the apps they use throughout the day causes immense friction," Google continued.
