Wedding for virtual couples in Tokyo

Niitzuma LovelyxCation is now ringing the wedding bells with virtual life partners. Last Friday, a big ceremony took place in Tokyo for the first time in a real chapel.

It sounds as crazy as it is. In Japan, the first wedding in VR with a virtual life partner took place. The groom married his virtual partner last week on Friday with a big ceremony in a real chapel in Tokyo.

Till a Reebot do us part

The short video clip shows how the whole thing happened at the altar. First, a hygienic protective paper is put on before the groom in the suit puts on the VR glasses. So that he doesn't have to kiss the vacuum, something is held out to him.

The whole concept goes back to the Japanese anime game company Niitzuma LovelyxCation. Players could previously build a relationship with their application and have a girlfriend in VR. The game can be played from home. So far, there have been three female characters to choose from, named Yuki Isurugi, Aiko Kurihara and Nono Naruse.

Real fans take the final step and get married

But in order to be able to offer real fans the real, emotional experience of a wedding, the developers are now additionally organising these private ceremonies with all the trimmings. Niitzuma LovelyxCation launched the application back on 28 April 2017, and people in Japan who were willing to get married could apply until 28 May to take part in the wedding on 30 June. So the groom has been involved with the three anime characters for around two months, built up a relationship and on the day of the wedding decided on one of the three virtual women before saying yes.

While many of us find it extremely unusual to have a virtual partner, it is very popular in Japan. Games in which you meet virtual characters, date them and spend time with them have been around for a long time.

Niitzuma, by the way, translates as "new woman".
