Dive with VR

Immersion is the effect of being completely immersed in virtual worlds and realities. So what do we call it when you go on a real dive with VR goggles?

The blogger Joe Durbin has written on UploadVR reports how he tried a VR headset in the water and how it worked. The product is still so fresh that it doesn't even have a name, he writes. However, the two developers Stephen Greenwood and Allan Evans have already presented the product to him with an early access demo. In the video, you get an impression of what the underwater VR headset looks like from the outside.

Weightless in space or on a dive

On the one hand, he could enjoy himself on a space walk, which was accompanied by soft music. And on the other, he was allowed to enjoy a dive in a virtual coral reef with many colourful fish to the song Space Oddity by David Bowie. The choice of music is debatable, but the feeling of being weightless in the water and at the same time diving into such a world must be incredible.

Waterproof, but water is needed

The headset itself works like a Google Cardboard - only it is waterproof because the Samsung Galaxy Edge Phone is inside a diving mask. In addition, the refraction of the water is used to adjust the images correctly. In other words, this VR headset only works in water.

A project with potential

The prototype is still in its early stages. At the moment, there is no positional tracking built in and the headphones are still from third-party suppliers. So at the moment, users still have to be careful not to crash into a wall in the pool when they have the headset on their head. So the project definitely still has potential for development, but they seem to be on the right track.

Here again there is potential for VR Fitness. Boring laps in the indoor swimming pool could be spiced up by an exciting VR application.
