The number of book buyers is falling and falling. It is difficult to lure young people in particular away from the display and inspire them with literary fantasy worlds. Great literature has therefore long since moved - out of the comfort zone between two book covers and into the new media: audio books, e-books, social media channels.<\/p>\n
Der Amerikaner Mika Johnson setzt nun ganz neue Massst\u00e4be. Der Regisseur und Kafka-Fan lehrt an der Prager Filmhochschule und hat aus einem St\u00fcck Weltliteratur einen virtuellen Trip in Kafkas Welt erschaffen. „VRwandlung“ heisst Johnsons Kunstprojekt. Die Auftragsarbeit f\u00fcr das Goethe-Institut in Prag ist gerade auf Welttournee.<\/p>\n
Um Kafka erlebbar zu machen, fertigten tschechische Modellbauer das klaustrophobisch kleine Zimmer Gregor Samsas von Hand. Beraten von der Kafka-Gesellschaft und mit r\u00fchrender Liebe zum Detail: Im Regal stehen eine Goethe-Anthologie sowie Briefe van Goghs und Grimms M\u00e4rchen. Die Tape\u00adtenmuster sind originalgetreu aufgemalt. Die Installation wurde hochaufl\u00f6send fotografiert und in eine dreidimensionale, begehbare digitale Kulisse \u00fcbertragen. „Ich wollte vermeiden, dass die W\u00e4nde, das Holz und die Objekte wie in einem Computerspiel aussehen“, sagt Johnson. Mika Johnson liess das Zimmer f\u00fcr VRwandlung zun\u00e4chst von Modellbauern in Prag anfertigen. Danach wurde es gescannt und animiert.<\/p>\n
Equipped with virtual reality glasses and sensors on hands and feet, the visitor then transforms himself into Gregor Samsa in this setting: for this purpose, the body is scanned, measured by infrared cameras and the position in virtual space is continuously calculated. At the beginning of the trip, the visitor sits on a simple metal bed, surrounded by sombre violin and cello sounds, and hears cracking, crunching noises that simulate threatening remodelling processes in his body.<\/p>\n
The heartbeat accelerates from its usual rhythm to the beat of an insect's heart. When the visitor lowers his head, he sees a grey insect carapace. If he moves his hands, six arms move. Knocking and shouting can be heard behind the two doors. When the visitor stands up, he can wander through the small room, study the books on the shelf, the photos on the wall. At some point, the view in the mirror follows: a shock, especially if one does not know the narrative.<\/p>\n
„Eine junge Japanerin stiess einen Schrei aus, als sie sich erblickte“, erz\u00e4hlt Mika Johnson. Ein Student tanzte versonnen vor dem Spiegel, erfreute sich der ungewohnten, schwerf\u00e4lligen Bewegungen seines \u00adInsektenk\u00f6rpers, des Wogens der F\u00fchler. Einzelne Besucher meinten sogar, die F\u00fchler auf dem Kopf zu sp\u00fcren. Ein kleiner Junge wollte nach der Begegnung mit Kafka in der virtuellen Realit\u00e4t unbedingt die ganze Erz\u00e4hlung lesen.<\/p>\n
The trip is over after four minutes at the latest. Those who have found the key in a drawer of the secretary can shorten the whole thing and use it to open a door. The finale. A sky-bright white light dazzles the viewer transformed into Gregor Samsa. A powerful, sustained melody, played on an organ, resounds - Samsa's sombre musical theme.<\/p>\n
Geht es nach Mika Johnson, schl\u00f6ssen sich an die „Verwandlung“ weitere Kafka-Stoffe an: eine Szene aus dem „Prozess“, ebenfalls nur einige Minuten lang, gefolgt von der „Strafkolonie“. Johnson ist von dem Autor geradezu besessen. Eben hat er in Prag zehn Kafka-Doppelg\u00e4nger ge\u00adcastet f\u00fcr einen geplanten Film \u00fcber einen fiktiven Sohn Kafkas.<\/p>\n
